About this pattern
We have a very busy squirrel in our backyard who spends every autumn burying acorns in my flower pots. This little red squirrel is for him. He's sitting on an oak branch with his big curly tail, his tufted ears up, and an acorn held tight to his chest.
His shapes are clean and the color areas are generous, with a darker stripe in the tail and a cream tummy to give him some depth. There's a bit more shaping than in a beginner piece, which keeps it interesting, but it's still a calm and steady stitch. The oak leaves, falling leaves and the acorn hanging under the branch finish the scene.
It's 60 x 60 stitches with 9 DMC colors, about 4.3 x 4.3 inches on 14 count Aida. That's a nice size for a 6 inch hoop or a small frame. Antique white or cream fabric makes his copper colors glow.
He makes a sweet gift for a nature lover or a woodland nursery, and he looks right at home next to the pumpkins on a fall shelf.
