How to choose a Christmas pattern you'll actually finish

I've started more December projects than I care to admit, so here's what works in my house. If it's already December, pick an ornament or a mini: most are under 50 stitches across and stitch up in an evening or two on 14-count aida. If you have a few weeks, a gingerbread cottage or a snowy woodland scene is a lovely middle size. Samplers like the folk Christmas bands are the slow, heirloom kind, the ones you start with a cup of tea in November.

Every pattern comes with a full-color chart, a black & white symbol chart, a large print chart for tired evening eyes and a Pattern Keeper friendly PDF. Want to know how big it will be on your fabric? Pop the stitch count into the fabric & size calculator.

Christmas cross stitch questions

When should I start a Christmas cross stitch pattern?

For a small ornament, a weekend is plenty, even in mid-December. For a sampler or a bigger piece, start by early November if you want it framed or finished as a gift. Each pattern lists its stitch count and size, so you can plan honestly.

Are these Christmas patterns good for beginners?

Many are. Every pattern has an honest difficulty label, and the beginner ones use full cross stitches, a small palette and very little confetti. You can also browse all beginner cross stitch patterns.

Do I get a physical kit?

No, these are digital PDF patterns. You download them right after checkout and print at home or stitch from a tablet. Fabric, floss and hoop are not included; the floss key lists every DMC color you need.

Can I use the patterns in Pattern Keeper?

Yes. Every pattern includes a Pattern Keeper friendly PDF, plus full-color, black & white and large print charts.

Are there free Christmas cross stitch patterns?

Yes! A few little ornaments are free when you join The Hearth Letter. Find them on the free patterns page and in my free Christmas ornament guide.
