About this pattern
This moth specimen sampler cross stitch pattern lays out nine moths like a plate from an old natural history cabinet, each one labelled with its Latin name in small sampler capitals. I wanted something for a dark academia shelf that still feels warm, so the moths are in their real colors on oatmeal Aida, under a plain border with LEPIDOPTERA across the top.
The nine moths
- Automeris io (io moth)
- Actias luna (luna moth)
- Dryocampa rubicunda (rosy maple moth)
- Deilephila elpenor (elephant hawk-moth)
- Hyalophora cecropia (cecropia moth)
- Acherontia atropos (death's-head hawk-moth)
- Arctia caja (garden tiger moth)
- Antheraea polyphemus (polyphemus moth)
- Tyria jacobaeae (cinnabar moth)
What's inside
- Color, black and white, large print and Pattern Keeper compatible charts, plus an OXS file
- Floss key with DMC numbers and skein amounts (18 colors)
- A second colorway, Sepia plate: every moth in warm browns on antique white
- Real-size preview, stitch-time estimate and a progress tracker
Size: 158 x 160 stitches, about 11.3 x 11.4 inches on 14 count, 9.9 x 10 inches on 16 count or 8.8 x 8.9 inches on 18 count. It's about 35 hours of stitching at about 200 stitches an hour (your pace may vary), and every moth is a small finish of its own along the way.
Full stitches only, intermediate. It makes a thoughtful gift for a biology teacher, a gardener who leaves the porch light on for moths, or anyone who keeps pressed flowers in their books. I suggest Oatmeal or Antique White 14 count Aida. Every preview is rendered from the actual chart, so what you see is what you stitch.
Plus our free beginner cheat sheet and bonus minis with every order.
